(CNN) – More than a dozen people were killed when a bus crashed in central Mexico, officials said.

Eighteen people were on board when the bus carrying 12 passengers — mostly students — from Uruapan to Cancun on Sunday morning crashed into another vehicle, Mexico’s Interior Ministry said.

The students were on their way to a prestigious school where they will soon begin classes as seniors.

Two people were hospitalized, Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete Prida said in a statement. They were in stable condition and not carrying any adult passengers.

The driver, who had a tour permit with the local government, remained hospitalized after being released from police custody, the ministry said.

He denied the car had any mechanical problems before the crash.

Most of the bus passengers, 10 of them women, died at the scene, with the other four victims taken to the hospital, according to the ministry.

At least nine children and two adults died at the scene.
